According to Snopes.com, the name Easter derives from the German spring goddess Eastre, and not the Babylonian goddess Ishtar. The hare was an important animal to Eastre, and it was believed that they would roam around Germany laying eggs as a sign of spring, resurrection, and the on-going of life. Which would make sense to why the early Christians would adopt the name for the holiday to celebrate Jesus’s resurrection. So, happy Easter to all you Christians, and to all you pagans, happy Eastre.
